How to Sew the Whip Stitch

Although I am not a fan of sewing…there are time when you have to. Like sewing pockets onto my newest pattern, the Summer Nights Wrap. The pattern itself doesn’t use any sewing, but the pockets are added after. The Whip Stitch is the best sewing stitch to use when sewing pieces together.

You will find that a lot of Crochet It Creations patterns will have instructions on how to eliminate sewing. Like the Cameo Cardigan, which has no sewing at all! It doesn’t even slip stitch pieces together. The cardigan is one piece and joins to create seams!

Since I am a crocheter, I will be working with yarn in the photos. But the whip stitch can also be used with thread to sew 2 fabrics together, or whatever you are working with. In the photos, I am sewing a pocket on to a wrap that I made.

Materials Needed

You will see in the photo below that I am using a tapestry needle to sew the yarn. Sew through both pieces from the bottom to the top. Keep going to next stitch, pulling tight as you go.

Photo below shows the in and out of the whip stitch in blue. I am using 2 colors here, but with 1 solid color it will be less noticeable.

I completed the whip stitch all the way around the pocket, then weaved in the tail.

If you struggle with sewing and getting things even, try using stitch markers to keep the item in place as you sew. I use these stitch markers here found on Amazon, but use which ever ones are available to you. Or you could use safety pins.

Here is my completed photo of the Summer Nights Wrap. See the crochet pattern HERE.

Try the Mattress Stitch sewing technique if looking for a way to sew items together but no seeing the stitches. It’s perfect for sewing garment.
